Thuja occidentalis 'White cedar'

Post by Elias »

G'day All,

Just wanted to ask if anyone has used Thuja occidentalis...? I've seen some nice ones on Google image search, it doesn't look like too many people use it as a "bonsai" , the species is readily available and mature specimens aren't too hard to find, I have a few and would like to hear of anyone having good or bad experiences with them please :)

Thanks,
Elias

Hans Van Meer has a nice one.
You just have to be creative with them and work with they way they grow.

I have dozens of these at my place and was planning to pinch them with a chainsaw about one inch above the ground. It might be worth playing around with a couple.

Antonio,
I have decided to keep them for a windbreak for the time being, but if I decide later on to remove them, I'll let you know. They're big, from 4-8 inches in diameter and were planted between 1987 and 1991.

How well does thuja occidentalis grow in Australia? Are there any considerations that should be taken as far as the climate goes before starting to grow one?
Thuja occidentalis has been considered possibly useful medicinally after in vitro and in vivo studies.
