How to propagate japanese black pine

Discussions about propagating from cuttings, seeds, air layers etc. Going on a dig (Yamadori) or thinking of importing? Discuss how, when and where here.

Hi Mark,
Most Japanese black pines are grown from seed (Aust quarantine does not allow import of black pine seed to prevent disease) Sow seed in winter or spring, prick out seedlings when you can handle them as for most other plants.
It is possible but difficult to grow JBP as cuttings. A couple of years ago I had quite good strike rates but since then very few strikes.
JBP can be layered but it can take some time for roots to grow.
