Blue atlas Cedar and my place.

I was photographing this Cedar as it is about to undergo a large change. All the upper branches will be undercut and pulled down and the two bottom ones removed (i think) the trunk is way to large to do anything with but i can still manipulate the branching. Anyway, i looked into the background with the iris's and roses and other things breaking out and realised it was stunning. It amazes me how the eye can miss stuff when the mind is focused on a different agenda. Well, that is my epiphany for the day

Very true Bodhidharma, one of my favourite sayings is from a little girl who was out fishing with her dad. Looking across the water and unable to see land she turns to her dad and says...."I can see further than my eyes can see". Oh to have such vision. Nice time of years now with everything flowering, looks nice.

Hi Bodhi , mate thats a good looking tree . Are you sure it a blue Atlas cedar , it looks like a Colarado Blue Spruce to Me , but i have been known to be wrong on a few occasions .Its amazing what is missed , when the mind is busy .

Hi Alpine, you could well be right mate. I have always thought it was a blue Atlas but i will now conduct an investigation. Thanks for the heads up.

Bodhi,

The bark looks too rough for BAC

Please don't take any of the branches off, just under cut them and bring them down.

That is a nice aged trunk with reasonable taper, once the branches are set it'll make a great large bonsai.

I'd head for something like this:

Alpine has also pmed me to go slowly. I will certainly take all this on board as i think this tree has great potential. It is about 900mm tall and has good age. Ta for the heads up. I will hasten slowly.

A good and popular observation Ozzy. I will be giving this a lot of thought before i tackle it. the photo Scott posted is very doable.

Hi Bodhi,

Mine is another vote for the go-easy on the branch removal camp. Your tree already looks tall and I think if you keep the branches from spreading too widely it will keep that look. I haven't seen many photos of these blue spruce as bonsai - are they commonly used? The colour and foliage texture and the bark is superb.

This is a very impressive tree. Sorry to be repetitive but I agree don't be in to much of rush with those branches.
I came across this tree and thought it was nearly a perfect design for this tree to think about.

From some great input from Alp's and Mojo (where has he gone?) i now have the true name of this tree. It shows me that i still have Soooo much to learn

Anyhow, an update. The tree was put into pull down wiring for a while to create the "feel" of the tree and left for a year. It was then repotted into its new home and again left for a while. I have just spent quite a bit of time strung out over two weeks thinning out and making branch selection secondary's, tertiary's etc. The tree's branches were undercut and pulled down into place and extensively wired out. Lots of hours gone into this one. I will now let it recuperate for a couple of years, keep my fingers crossed that i did not work it to hard and update in a while.
