Massive Newly collected privet

Post by hugh grant »

Collected this privet last weekend from a creek which I've had my eye on for about 6 months. I finally found some time to rip into it. The tree was originally a very large tree, at least 30-40cm diameter at it base. The tree had rotted away except for this live piece . You could see where the rest of the trees trunk had rotted from the hole In the ground where it had been. . It was a hard dig and I didn't get as much root as I'd hoped but I'm hoping it will pull through.

It stands at about 1.5 metres (not including the branches at the top which makes it about 2.2 metres). It has the nest dead wood I've seen on a privet that spirals up the trunk.

Nice hollow

I'm very excited about this tree, and eager to see if it recovers!

I also spotted this little fella as well

It has nice cracking bark

Great trunk. It will be interested to see how you harmonise the foliage with such a craggy beast. Please keep posting it as it progresses.

Massive Newly collected privet

Thanks all, I'm hoping it will turn out to be a nice tree in the future.
Hi Gavin, the foliage will have to brought down from top to create the branches I think, I'm gust hoping for some buds from the point where the dead wood stops and the new long branches begin. If not ill just have to Grady some there if it Only shoots from the long twigs.

Nice one!

PS-Is it just me or does that hollow in picture 3 look just like a map of our fair country! Well, Western Australia gets very wonky, but from Cape York down to Tassie is perfect! :aussie:
