I bought a set of Japanese graving knives from an antique store today, and it came with 5 gravers, a sharpening stone and this strange black, round object wrapped in bamboo. Does anyone know what the object might be and what it is used for? The brand seems to be 'Maruichi'. Thank you!
Greetings, I would suggest a very fine stone for a final hone after sharpening. It may be pourous and soft with rounded edges.
Remember you should only sharpen one side of the tool to leave the other side flat.
Happy bonsai,
Bruce.
It's for rubbing the paper when printing during woodblock printing; after you have carved it with the gravers; after inking. It has a special name, but can't think of it at the moment.
