Port Jackson Figs

Post by KyBonzai »

This is the first ever tree i got for bonsai
bonsai table 32 (267x400).jpg
it has grown Quite a bit since i have had it
IMG_0199 (338x450).jpg
Plans for this tree
1. let it grow untill its roots fill out the current pot( so not very long :P )
2. Pot it up into a large Black nursery pot and let it grow like mad and develop heaps of aeireals :)
3. Turn it into some kind of banyan or twin trunk style tree

Thats the plan on paper anyway haha
all ideas are welcome so if you have something to say that could improve my knowledge or the tree say it!! :)

Cheers Khan

Port Jackson Figs

Post by Isitangus »

Hi khan I would get it into as bigger pot as possible now-not waiting till it fills it's current pot. The biggest nursery pot you can find!
You could also look at the thread on how to develop fat figs quickly.
Other than that feed like mad-nows the time.
In terms of styling you could even change the planting angle an style into informal upright. For more options chop back to encourage back budding-which it will do easily

Seeing as you can pretty much repot these guys anytime you want i'll think about doing it this weekend :tu:
i have a pretty big black nursery pot and a even bigger terracotta pot so maybe go the terracotta one :lost:
I'll most likely chop it back and take cuttings once im happy with the trunk size

Hi Ky,

I'm in the same situation as you - my first bonsai was a PJ Fig. :) I've slipped the little guy into a larger pot and have been feeding him regularly and the results are insane.

I found this tutorial (How to Develop Dynamic Figs Quickly) interesting/motivational. Tho, this may not entirely suit your situation.

I am really interesed to see how your figs progress!

This is my first bonsai which my dad bought for me when I was maybe 10years old... :palm:
I have only a month or two ago had it returned to me (from the depths of my parents backyard).

Moving it into a larger pot and feeding it has made it back-bud like crazy. I will upload some newer photos once I work out what I am to do with it. :lost:

So just repotted this afternoon and took about 80% of the roots off as there was some ugly tuber roots that were circling the base of the trunk :palm:
i also potted up to the base of the fork in the trunk so hopefully will get more roots from the lower trunk thats underground

with this crazy weather we're having at the moment all my figs have been growing as if they're on steroids
this guy has crazy aeireals and the trunk has thickened up considerably.
still just going to let it grow for the rest of the year before making any big decisions
pics to come when this rain stops!!

Hi Ky,

You may need to try take the next photo against a plain background, it is very busy in the photo and can't see any of the finer branching.

Cheers,
Pearcy.
