My mum got given this for xmas and we are not sure what it is. Can anyone help me out

Seeing that you live in the tropics, it could be Carissa macrocarpa. Does it have double thorns or look like it had them and have been cut off? Sometimes known as Natal Plum. See link https://www.google.com.au/search?q=cari ... mQXP3ICYAw

Why is it that some people can't just give there oppinion.....if someone does not agree is there really a need to jump on your shetland pony and pretend its a high horse???

I think that you may find it is not of tropical origin - possibly a temperate plant such as an Ilex. If you want to be sure bring it along to Cairns bonsai club - see info elsewhere on this site. Ash

Looks like an Ilex Crenata or Japanese Holly. Very hardy little tree. :D
