I would like to know if any of you feed your Bonsai with slow release fertiliser (or any other fertiliser for that matter) during Autumn / Winter. If the answer is yes, is their noticeable growth? Oh, and also what species you are using it for.
I have been told by someone reputable not to fertilise during this period....it is a "No No" I'm not sure that is entirely correct.

Re: Fertiliser during winter
I feed all my bonsai through winter with liquid and slow release, results in spring are great , if your trees are in a VERY well draining mix you will never have a problem(i would nerver use potting mix with water saving crystals added this could lead to disaster over the cooler months.

Re: Fertiliser during winter
In Sydney, all but some of my deciduous trees put on noti9ceable growth thru winter, and even then some of my elms and maples still grow throughout the winter.
In order to let them grow, I fertilise in winter as well, but just just Reduce the rate at which I feed them
I use Charlie carp and Seasol alternate weeks and place Dynamic Lifter on the soil surface as well
Works fro me

Re: Fertiliser during winter
The only trees that have any feed here during the 'short' days are the semi tropical few which are kept inside for protection from our harsh winter weather. They do exhibit some slight growth at this time and are fed at a low strength once each month. The conditions in Oz can be so varied but they are obviously not like mine in the UK.

My name is Don. I'm a UK nutter and bonsaiholic but I'm on medication (when I can find the tablets)
ad sum ard labor.

I am probably the milder side of average here. Coastal areas are mild and probably do not get a real winter anywhere, but down south and inland certainly do
