Radiata Pine

Hi Guys
The area in which i live is pine country. Radiata pine is the main industry here and there is great yamadori everywhere.(Actual yamadori, my town is called Mount Gambier for a reason ).
My question is, when is the best time to collect said yamadori? there are hundreds of trees here and not a great deal of bonsai enthusiests (that I know) to share them with so im in no real risk of losing them to other people.
Can somene please give me some advise.

Late Winter and early Spring for where i am but there is some great threads here in collecting Radiata. We probably also have advice in our wiki.

Ill post some pics of a couple trees That I found this morning. Its a bit of a climb to get there and I didnt have my Phone with me.
Some really good stock though.

If there's no one else around you could always keep them in the ground and just chop them back-field grown trees???

Could do. From what I can tell they vary in age maybe up to 5-6 years for the smaller ones.

the angle of the pics is very deceiving. Its quite a steep down slope they are on. great for cascade.
These are just 2 easy ones to get to. there is many more that are a bit harder to climb to... but I will anyway

I don't think they are radiatas. Maybe stone pines or alleppos

Hi Damian,

I did about two diggings of radiatas that I had planted in my backyard.

The last one was on 07/July/2012, it was on the ground for about 3 years. Its roots did not go down very deeply.

Stone pine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Pine = a 2-needle pine. It has very distinctive juvenile foliage, totally different from the mature foliage. The lower branches of the pine in the second photo seem to show juvenile foliage, which is prob. why Webos questioned the id. of Radiata pine. Right, Webos?

Aleppo pine:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinus_halepensis = a 2-needle pine, with needles often curved or twisted.

Radiata pine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinus_radiata = a 3-needle pine.

Ahhh ok
I think maybe Aleppo after looking at the links, this species is considered invasive in some parts of SA.

• Not sure you got that right, but it's difficult to judge on the basis of (pardon me) 2 very poor photos.
  Did you know that there is a bonsai club in Mount Gambier? Called The Bonsai Society of Mount Gambier. Email Darren Archibald on <dyarchie@bigpond.com>. They would be able to help you better than we can.
  Please, post decent pics next time you need an id. or other bonsai advice.

I must apologize for the picture quality I know its not the best. I will try to get some better pics to help. My phone was the only camera I had with me that perticulay day, and its not the easiest spot to get to so I havent been back as yet.
I do appreciate your feedback though. My original question was relating to digging these at the right time of year. As I mentioned in an earlier post, these were just the easiest to get to for pictures.
Ill try to get some pics tomorrow LLK so you can have a beter look.

Damian, the Bonsai Society of Mt Gambier meet at 1 Wehl St, South Mt Gambier. The meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from Feb - Nov. It's near Vansittart Park. Contact number for the club is 8725-2632 if you would like more info.

Yamadori is not as free as "collecting from the wild" in this country...
