G'day Daniel.
Pretty hard to understand what's going on here from the one pic and your description.
A couple more pictures and a bit more of a brief re. "the outlay of the top" will likely to attract a better response.
Cheers!

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Just be careful where the shari/ deadwood touches the soil. Capillary action will cause it to rot in that area. Try to keep wet soil away from the deadwood.

I bought a conifer recently, and started removing the top soil to see the trunk/nebari. They were well bellow the top of the soil. Discovered at the base of the trunk area like a shari. Or maybe just rotten.Brian wrote:Just be careful where the shari/ deadwood touches the soil. Capillary action will cause it to rot in that area. Try to keep wet soil away from the deadwood.
I removed all the top soil.
How dangerous is that and what should I do to prevent further damage.
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.
