Golden juniper

Post by matlea »

Hi all,

Has anyone had any experience / tried to bonsai the vertical cone growing juniper species. Think it was gold juniper .... Not sure if I like the colour of these but the price was reasonable... Worth a go or waste of time?...

IMO matlea, I will say go for , look at maybe some formal or informal upright style. Could just pay off.
I've never used the species personally, but it looks like it could work nicely with the different foliage colours.

I have a small one of these that I'm developing as a long term project. It seems to respond about the same as my other J chinensis as far as training goes. I actually bought it on accident as it was mixed in with a bunch of others, and I didn't realize it was the gold variety until I got it home. It looked good enough that I decided to keep it and see where it goes anyway. I haven't seen many as bonsai, but there's nothing wrong with something different, right?

Post some photos, and let us know if the color changes any during the fall.
Cheers, Karl

Hi lackhand,

I didn't end up buying it... Well not yet :) may not as i'm running out of space to put things..( and I'm lining up a reasonably sized bougy from my grandparents place)... .although as a side project I have tried a few cuttings of a similar type this year which seem to be going ok to date....
