Re: [Mojo Moyogi] Atlas Cedar #1
I finally got a chance to do a little work on this tree.
The preferred front. There are branches on the top of this tree that I wish to use in the final design, the challenge is getting the tree down to shohin size of 250mm or less from a current height of 430mm. A little movement in the trunk wouldn't hurt either.
The trunk is wrapped tightly with bicycle inner tube in preparation for heavy wire and compression bending.
Front view after bending, height is now 280mm. I applied a single 6mm wire in a very open coil all the way up the trunk and then went over this with 3 strands of 4.5mm which gave me the control I was after. A couple of branches were wired and placed, but there is plenty more to be done structurally to the canopy in the coming months.
Right side.
Left side.
Rear.
That will be enough punishment for now, time to let the cracks in the trunk heal.
Cheers,
Mojo

Waw! Very interesting. Waiting to see how you style a cedar.
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.

Re: [Mojo Moyogi] Atlas Cedar #1
In the last week of April I root-pruned and repotted into a 20cm colander using my usual mix that has 50% Mt Silvia diatomite.
The root ball was reduced by about 2/3. And then some.
Now almost 10 weeks later the tree is doing just fine following heavy wiring, bending and a reduction repot. The slight color change is quite normal for this time of year, the tree is fully dormant at the moment.
Somewhere in there is a future apex.
Cheers,
Mojo

This one is out, didn't make the cut of 19 trees that I wanted to take to the deadline, before I pulled all entries out anyway. Not coming out of dormancy at all convincingly, no way to get it done in the timeframe.
