A layering variant

Post by MattA »

Over the years I have tried all sorts of layering methods, mediums, timing etc as well as innumerable species. I have found what works for some doesn't always work for others and have also found a few ways of my own & this is one for species that will callous but are reluctant to produce roots. The latest test subject is a Michelia figo 'Coco' that I am developing but didnt want to waste the excess branching, I know from past experience that this species is reluctant to root as a layer but can be grown from hardwood cuttings using bottom heat rooting hormone & misting, now I dont have that sort of setup so how can I get around it :lost:

First off, get the wood to produce callous by air layering using the ringbark method, as it doesn't need to support any root only enough sphagnum is needed to maintain moisture around the wood, this was done midwinter 2012.

The layers where seperated Feb '13 and one potted up while the others where left untouched. 6wks on & the one potted singly has produced atleast some root as evidenced by one seen at a drainage hole. On inspecting the rest I found 2 had no roots yet but the third...

I very gently removed the moss from around the root & stem & potted it up, the other 2 have been left & will be checked again in a few more weeks. At this stage they are still very much alive & even making new growth so something is going on in there....

It wouldn't be my first choice of method but for those trees that can be a little stubborn it has been a useful addition to my toolbox.
