First off, get the wood to produce callous by air layering using the ringbark method, as it doesn't need to support any root only enough sphagnum is needed to maintain moisture around the wood, this was done midwinter 2012. The layers where seperated Feb '13 and one potted up while the others where left untouched. 6wks on & the one potted singly has produced atleast some root as evidenced by one seen at a drainage hole. On inspecting the rest I found 2 had no roots yet but the third... I very gently removed the moss from around the root & stem & potted it up, the other 2 have been left & will be checked again in a few more weeks. At this stage they are still very much alive & even making new growth so something is going on in there.... It wouldn't be my first choice of method but for those trees that can be a little stubborn it has been a useful addition to my toolbox.
