Its not a pine i believe mate, I think it maybe a cypress of some kind but im not expert with ID , for 6 bucks you wave got something fun to play with. The foliage can be hard to control on these. and im not sure like most conifers if you cut back past old growth you may suffer dieback?

Yep certainly doesn't look like a pine to me.

I'd say some type of Juniper or maybe a Cypress as well.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

At a wild guess Chaemecyparus obtusa - there are a lot of rockery dwarf forms, I think. I'm totally not an expert. You'd never cut back to bare wood, and repot lightly in late winter, just as the new buds swell. I've seen worse root balls - don't go too mad too quickly. Good score.

It is not a Pine. As has been pointed out, it could be one of the many Cupressus or Chamaecyparis.

I am sorry I could not be more specific.

Cheers Pup
