Callitris Glaucophylla from tube stock

Post by alpineart »

These were purchased form a Native nursery closing down 2 years ago . they were a couple of years old and healthy little shrubs , so i slip potted them into 150mm pots and allowed them to grow on in March 2012

. Some time in the last 12 months i have obviously wired the trunks and trimmed 1 tree with scissors and re-potted them into their current oversize training pots .They have double in size since being overpotted so it was time to tame them a little ,

It has taken most of the day to do these two , given the opportunity to play with some more tube stock i would certainly use the option number 2 method of trimming young with scissors as the denser foliage in more refined and finer . These can grow on until the wire bits in then i will remove it and let them run on .

Hi Jadecuphey87 , mate more than happy with their progress , its a pity the camera shows them up as green rather than the blue foliage . I'm hoping the over potting makes for good growth and a buttress trunk . As with most limited native's i have played with , the results are better with tube stock than larger or collected material . I seem to loose more than my fair share of them , still learning a lot from my mistakes with natives .

Cheers Alpine

Hi Alpine, Great to see some Callitris on the site . They are looking very nice. :) .I think you are on the money by wiring them when they are young . Several of my collected ones seem to take forever to set in place .One sprang back into place after a year of wiring. I recently set a ground layer on one ,hoping to get a better nebari ,used Ray M method so only time will tell. Regards John.

Hi Mate the ingredients are the same as all my bonsai plant material is potted in . Scoria and pine bark , ratio for Natives is 80 % scoria 20 % pinebark . The scoria is 7mm screenings and pine barks is 8mm sifted and screened

Hi Damian Bee , been playing and trialing several natives , some good results like this some very poor to bad .

Hi Boom64 , mate i cant remember when i applied the wire to the trunks but it was after i slipped them into the 150mm pots . They took off and the wire bit in giving numerous swollen area's above the wire at the branches, this wiring is concentrated over the swelling so it will hopefully bite in quick and give a uniform knarled trunk .

From what i recall it was only a matter on a few months and the trunks were set from bean pole straight to the current pre trimmed movement . I'm assuming the branches will set in 2-3 months as they are powering on in the scoria mix . All my collected Enlicheri or be it 98 % of them died , they were in soil mixes not this scoria blend . If i get the opportunity to collect some more the will go straight in the scoria mix .

Cheers Fella's. Alpine
