3rd Symposium on Australian Plants as Bonsai 15-16 Mar 2014

Post by JenniferM »

Hi All

Organisation is well underway for the 3rd Symposium on Australian Plants as Bonsai and the 10th National Exhibition of Australian Plants as Bonsai which will be held at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra on 15-16 March 2014.

The theme for the 3rd Symposium is 'Naturally Inspired' , continuing the exploration of how we can use trees in the Australian landscape and their natural growth forms as inspiration for how we shape Australian plants as bonsai.

The symposium will include:
· a presentation on Eucalypts as bonsai, bringing together information from a range of bonsai growers and including superb photos,
· a presentation on developing a group setting of Tasmanian pencil pines, using advanced stock and inspired by ‘wild’ photos,
· workshops and demonstrations each day, featuring Podocarpus lawrencei and Leptospermum horizontalis, and including one ‘bring or buy’ workshop, :)
· a guided walk in the Australian National Botanic Gardens to observe eucalypts and podocarps growing in their more natural style and to consider this form as a bonsai, and
. a small display of bonsai Grevillea and ‘works in progress’ will be presented on Sunday, with opportunity for questions.

:D

There will also be a ‘Show, Tell, Ask’ segment, providing opportunity for participants to share experiences and/or problems 8-) .

Full program details will be posted on the CBS website early in the new year and online registration will be available on the site shortly.

In the meantime - pencil the weekend into your diary and start planning your trip to Canberra. Also start looking at your Australian bonsai collection to identify which ones you might be able to enter in the exhibition, either 'in person' or as a photo. :tu:

Will post more details as they are confirmed.

Cheers

Hi Jason

It'll be great if you can make it... Would be great to have the west represented given the number of folk over there doing VERY nice work with Aussie plants.

So - hope we see you in March

Hi Peter

The full details will be in the Program when it goes up (minor technical glitch at the moment :( - hopefully will be fixed shortly)- but in summary:
- Gavin Gostelow, Will Fletcher and Roger Hnatiuk will present on Eucalypts, (as you may know Gavin has been doing some research into the use of Eucalypts as bonsai over the last little while... It'll be great to hear what he's found! - no pressure Gavin :) )
- Gavin and Roger will lead the walk through the ANBG,
- Will will also present the talk on Tasmanian pencil pines, and demonstrate and lead a workshop on Leptospermum horizontalis,
- Ruth McLucas will present on Podocarpus, including their use as bonsai, and Grant Bowie will demonstrate and lead a workshop on Podocarpus lawrencei ,
- Ruth will also lead a session on using Grevilleas as bonsai, and
- Neil Padbury from Shibui will lead a general workshop (either BYO tree/s or there'll be some trees available to purchase at the Symposium - details will be circulated later).

Hope this is useful

Cheers

Jennifer

Hi everyone,
Our technical problems are continuing :(, so given the short time before the Symposium and Exhibition, we have decided to go 'old-school' for this year and forget about online registration.

Attached are
* the Symposium outline,
Native symposium outline 2014 final.doc

* Symposium program,
Australian Plants as Bonsai symposium program - final.doc

* Symposium registration form,
Naturally Inspired Registration form.doc
and
* tree registration form for the Exhibition
Tree registration form.doc
.

Registration forms can be:
* sent electronically to registration@cbs.org.au or
* posted to Native Bonsai Symposium, Canberra Bonsai Society, PO Box 800, Woden, ACT 2606

Registrations and payments close on 1 March 2014.
Note: Venue restrictions limit us to a maximum of 40 Symposium participants and 8 participants for each of the workshops, so we suggest that you get in early to make sure you have a place.

If you have any queries about arrangements, you can email registration@cbs.org.au or post your query here.

Looking forward to seeing you in March.

Cheers

Jennifer

PS OOPs - error in the docs originally attached - have replaced them 3:10 EST.

Unfortunately it is a little too far, plus with the AABC/ BCI in Surfers this year even that one will be hard to attend this year.

Good luck though.

Hi again everyone

We've had some calls from people who have tried to pay registration fees on-line using the bank details we provided below, but the payments have been rejected... :lost:

The error is ours... the BSB details originally listed on the form belong to a closed account.

The correct bank details are:
Canberra Bonsai Society Inc
BSB: 032 724
Account No: 176358

The attached registration form has the correct bank details, please use this form rather than the old one below.
Naturally Inspired Registration form 20140103.doc

Apologies to everyone.
* If you've tried to pay but been rejected :( please try again with the new details.
* If you've tried using the old bank details and your payment appears to have been accepted, please contact Ruth (ph 02 6255 2058) and we will follow up with the bank.

It's good to know that people are registering early... :)

Cheers

Hey Pup

Sorry we won' t see you this year... :( Maybe next year - the VNBC will be hosting the Symposium and Exhibition in Melbourne next year which might make it easier for those from the west to make it.

Of course, you can still enter a tree (by photo) in the exhibition if you want.... :)

Cheers

:bump:

Just a reminder that registrations for the Symposium close in just over 4 weeks. And that the Symposium itself is just over six weeks away.

- The earlier closing date for rego is because we need to confirm logistics such as catering.

So... get those registrations in as soon as possible.

Cheers
