Was up at one of my favourite nurseries last week and picked up this Syzygium, I believe it's "tiny trev". It was growing through the bottom of the pot and into the ground. I asked if they would let me pull it out and if so how much would they want for it. He said if I can get it out I could have it. So with a good yank it came out and came home.
Any thoughts /comments welcome.
Josh
I am interested in peoples opinion on which direction I should take. I see 2 options.
Could I bend this down to form a cascade/semi cascade, do they grow below horizontal? I could bend/grow it back up also to have an informal/slanting tree.Syzygium australe'Tiny Trev' direction

Nice one, looks like a great candidate for a wind swept style.

Hi josh. Looks good in the windswept. Just be mindful they can be a bit brittle. I have broken mine a few times from bending.

Thanks Squizzy, I haven't even tried moving a branch so no idea on the brittle side. Thanks for the heads up. Maybe clip and grow then. I think this lead its own way to a certain degree.squizzy wrote:Hi josh. Looks good in the windswept. Just be mindful they can be a bit brittle. I have broken mine a few times from bending.

Hi Josh . mate one my miniture Lilly Pilly "name unknown" has very heavy/dense foliage on light/fine branches and it droops under its own weight even with fine copper wire
the others grow upright .I would consider the growth habit in any design , wind swept would be a nice challenge , slanting informal would be a lot easier and suit the growth habit .I collected mine in the same fashion from a nursery in Melb' , best of luck with this one as it is nice material to play with . As has been said they are a bit brittle and new shoots are easily dislodged .
Cheers Alpine

Hi Josh,
I like the look of the last option too. Somethings to keep in mind is that Tiny Trev will back bud very freely and new shoots lengthen and thicken quickly too. Younger shoots will be much easier to bend. So my thoughts would be to remove the straight, evened calibered section of trunk towards the right of the last picture. With proper care rather than the neglect it was receiving, even if you remove all the foliage you will get more than what you have now very quickly, and perhaps create more options. I have one I trim back very hard every 2 to 3 months and it comes back with more foliage than before.
Good Luck, Dan
