Old Privet

Post by Damian79 »

Hi Guys
I thought I would start a new progression thread on my Privet.(prompted by another thread going around at the moment) I don't know the exact type, I purchased it from a former ausbonsai member in March last year as a basic stump.

I knew it had to be chopped down as soon as I saw it, but didn't realize that it had a wonderful hollow trunk. Being eager and impatient :palm: All I wanted to do was carve it out to expose the natural hollow with the hopes of it becoming a interesting feature to the tree. Being my first carving effort, I thought it turned out OK.

For the next few months (heading into and through winter) I didn't really touch it much apart from pinching the tips out to encourage back budding, not that it needed much encouragement at all.
So into Spring we go and it explodes  Rubbing off buds here and there trimming back and pruning here and there and Im just now starting to get some good branches and starting to ramify the branches that are to be kept.
I plan to defoliate this weekend and rewire while the weather is nice and warm( we have only just got Summer temps finally).
I might make the split in the top part of the trunk larger at some point to open it up a bit more, keeping in mind however, that the angle it sits at now will be changed at the next repot.
You must forgive me for the quality of the Pics as I do not own a camera and All my pics are taken on my Galaxy Phone.
AnyHoo, Here it is as it sits On 30\01\14.

Nice carving effort! I'm no expert, but think it looks great :tu:

Good stuff mate.

This one is going to come along very nicely.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Don't think so mate. Got it from Former member MattA before he was banned. Not Sure why but I guess there was a good reason.
The tree is coming along nicely anyway just growing out a few sacrifice branches to thicken up the main branches.

Yep thats from Newy, Seems like everyone has a piece from that hedge that he dug. Lovely old material, Im particularly keen on mine to reshoot as ive cut it back hard. Mine has those old old old natural hollows as well and could do with some carving refinement. I will post some pictures when ive decided on the primary branches.

Keep us updated :)
