Indian hawthorn?

Post by klaery »

Hi guys/gals,
I inherited this plant from my partners grandfather and was told to bonsai it by his son (partners father). I guess this way it can live on now that he is gone. I am pretty sure it is an Indian hawthorn but would like confirmation. Also as you can see it has a very odd base and is very leggy. Can anybody see anything in this at this stage? I have heard you can cut them back very hard and they will shoot from the trunk but I am letting it recover from the transplant for now. There is a fair bit of mass below the soil line too. The tree would have also have some age on it. Not sure how much but it has been in a container out the front of their house for at least the last 8 years..

Edit: oh yea pics

Looks like Indian Hawthorn, they back bud no problem. Hard to get leaf size down though. I would consider cutting it back.

Thanks Bodhi for the info
How far do you think I could/should cut it back?
