hi everyone
i thought i'd start a discussion on bonsai nurseries.
first question: when was the last time you visited a bonsai nursery and when was the last time you made any purchase to financially support the people who dedicate full-time or part-time to the art that we enjoy and appreciate?

I last visited a bonsai nursery about 12 months ago, this was to purchase some pots and wire. I would estimate that over the last 10 years I would have purchased over 4k-5k worth of stock, tools, pots etc.
Always happy to support local bonsai nurseries as long as the stock is grown well: ie no straight trunks, root pruned correctly, at least a start on developing nebari and of course great customer service!
“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be like water, my friend.”
Unfortunately in south western Sydney there are no bonsai nurseries-the closest being about an hr away. In saying that I do visit them when in the area to see what grabs my eye (and wallet).
I also think that just because it's not a bonsai nursery doesn't mean I won't buy from them, for example in know of a number of people who are constantly "rotating" their stock so they can get in new stock-I enjoy Buying from them greatly.
Again like siddhar if the work and effort has been made I'm happy to part with my $$$
8th February on both questions, but the nursery I spent me money at sold me the stuff for their gain not any other warm and fuzzy reason. I spent $220 and was made feel like they were doing me a favor for selling me a pot! I even fixed there internet connection while I was there. That's my

would be interesting to hear your thoughts.
Hi Tien,
Yesterday - in answering both of your questions!
Cheers,
R&M
When I started out I Used to visit them a lot always buying something . Now after a few years I only go for supply's eg. Wire, pots and soil. The only trees I will buy in the future would be starters for my garden. As any good stock plants are very expencive. I would rather collect materal or layer branches to build my collection from.
Hi Tien,
I was at your place yesterday, it was a little bit over the top as you have heaps of starter and established trees, as I said to my friend ""There are a few diamonds in the rough"" I think it would take a few visits to take it all in
As for buying pots and wire I didn't notice them for sale? I went to Adelaide recently and pick-up a few pots very well priced compared to Melbourne.
Our club has Tools & Wire at a great prices & range.
It would be great if some one could look it importing pots from Japan, or is it to expensive or to hard to know what people want??
I have 3 weekends in a row visited Bonsai selling Nurseries, planning a road trip for next weekend to visit another and a short break.(planned to visit all nurseries, within 2 hours drive of home)
A few small purchasers but still haven't purchased main items such as tools, wire etc.( will soon start with main items!)
You are closest to me was planning to visit your nursery last.( 3 minutes away!)
Well, where I live it is hall of 4.5 hours to visit any stores. I did find a small local guy but they carry more hydroponics than bonsai.
Most of my tools and items are purchased off the net due to large distance to travel.
I have found someone in Denmark and will go out and get some more stock soon but generally it is nursery stock and takes lots of cuttings.
I visited Bonsai Emporium the other week but presses for time and I hit at morning tea time. Grabbed a couple of things but really wanted some good shimpaku stock but what was on show was limited. I think they where preparing in the shed.
Heading up in March so should have time to try a few than.
Last visited a couple of months ago.
Last purchased at this time.
I find that I don't like to purchase anything that is established.
I buy only starters or slightly progressed trees - I like to put my stamp on a tree and build that sentimental feel.
I also find bonsai nurseries great for finding tree species that cannot be found at your typical nursery/s.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful
how have you found the quality of stock over the years at bonsai nurseries? are they keeping up with your progression of knowledge and skill?
for those who don't buy more established bonsai stock, do you feel the price tag attached to it, is not justified with the quality presented?
Since my passion has re-kindled I seem to be up at Bonsai south every other week. I love going up there, great inspiration with the finished trees and the idea of not knowing what you might find tucked away amongst the stock gets me really excited each visit.
I have found that as I get more and more into things my desire to purchase close to finished trees (that is to say in bonsai pots) has lessened, and I too prefer to purchase something that I can put my stamp on. I think that in relation to the price of "finished tree's" (which I fully understand and appreciate) the stock tree's are very reasonably priced and the work that has already gone in to them is invaluable. And with the likes of what I have around here at most garden centres, unless it's very advanced stock (and in turn very tempting) the prices are on par with ordinary garden centre grown stock. I know which I would prefer!
I would love to see more nursery's around the place, but it would probably be bad for my wallet haha
