Bonsai Society of WA - Robert Steven Workshop/Demo/Critique

Post by Jason »

Hey guys,

Have some exciting news for all in WA, with Robert Steven heading our way for a weekend of workshops, critiques and demonstrations.
Capture.PNG
On Saturday the 26th of April, will be a Bonsai critique in the morning, followed by a workshop in the afternoon.
On Sunday the 27th of April, will be a Bonsai demonstration in the morning, followed by another workshop in the afternoon.
Finally on Monday night, the 28th of April, Robert will be attending our regular meeting for a multi-demonstration.

For further information, please see the flyer:
Robert_Steven_2014.pdf
Personally quite excited to meet and work with Robert, I love his windswept styles, and also his work on Casurina's, so will be great to talk with him about that, and everything else I can think of. I've heard he is quite a good teacher and has a 'different' way of thinking to most, so am very excited about the workshops.... I just need to find some stock now!

Here are some pictures of his tree's that I've taken a liking to:

If you have any questions, please contact me, or another member of BSWA, and we'll be happy to answer them :)

Hope to see you all there!! Well... those that can :hooray:

Cheers,
Jason

Beautiful Casuarinas. I don't suppose you know if Robert was planning to head to any other parts of Australia?
After roughly 20 years of growing bonsai, I reckon I might just be starting to get the hang of it...

Going from his website, he will be in Sydney in March, but then he is off to Israel in May :)

I'm thinking this might be an opportunity for me to come and meet some new faces. Not sure about bringing stock for the workshop, bit above my skill level...

You would have to be a member of the Society for that, or pay a fee, not sure what that is. He should be able to cater for all levels, if he is good enough. As many of the other internationals are.

Hehehe...close enough champ. Only one weekend apart...3 day week that one.

See I might be able to swing a trip up, play a round of golf on the Saturday morning and attend Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning before driving back.

Although I probably won't participate in the workshops, more than happy to pay the fee and just "spectate".

Will have to wait and see what the budget does.

For some reason I think I may have committed to something else that weekend but for the life of me can't remember what.

That workshop clashes with The Bonsai Workshop, does it not?

The Saturday does but not the Sunday. Then Monday evening he is at the Bonsai Society meeting.

Mate, one thing I've learnt about these kind of workshops, is that they are for any skill level. I've been doing bonsai for just over a year, still a raw beginner, and this will be my second workshop with an international artist. You don't need to bring in a masterpiece, nor do you need to have superb skills :) The last one I went to, I just bought some raw stock from a bonsai nursery a month before, and used that. You can see the before and after in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=104&t=16725&p=169935&hi ... is#p169935

I was insanely nervous prior to my first workshop, but afterwards I was left wondering why I bothered giving my nerves the time of day, as it turned out to be an absolute blast! Everybody there is friendly, and more then willing to give a helping hand wherever needed.

Failing that, you can always drop in and watch the workshops, as the club allows for people to sit and watch :) Which itself would be a great learning experience :tu2: Either way mate, would be great to see you there :)

Only $10 for non-club members :) although I beleive you need to be a club member to actually participate in the workshop, I can find that out for you if you need

Yes, its $10 per day just to observe for non-members. Or you can join for $40, get our newsletter, participate in the workshop and come along to other demonstrators over the next year! Bargain! Not many places you can work on a tree with an internationally renowned demonstrator and only pay that tiny cost for it ;-)
But if you want to participate, get in asap to put your name down as a participant because I'm told its filling up fast. :aussie:
