So I know have 7 Karume Azaleas (3 different varieties), 2 Procumbens Juniper, 1 Pfitzerina Media X Juniper, 4 Port Jackson Figs, 1 Tiger Bark Fig, 1 Melaluca (on the mend) and 3 Chinese Elm sticks in a pot.
A good mix with cuttings etc started and experimenting.
But the Figs have me excited. Back in the day a fig was my first, and I will be honest, I forgot how much I enjoyed them. The fact you get good fast growing results certainly assists the new comer in "feeling active" with the hobby. While playing with the figs it gives me the patience to plan the other projects.
So I grabbed some more stock, admittedly my dad claimed a couple of my favorite choices, but I was still left with some nice Figs.
This came from my first visit. I liked the twin trunk look and though why not. Got it at around $5 so didn't argue. I placed some wire on the smaller trunk and moved it as I have an idea in my head but to be honest, that may change as my experience with growing these changes.
This also came from the first visit. Heaps of action down low and I am more than interested to see what is revealed when I repot this. Again at $5, who cares. This pic was when I first got it home and you can see some brown leaves at the top. I left it in the car on a hot day the day I purchased it, so its been recovering. I cut some larger leaves and the dead leaves and it has gone nuts. Lots of fresh growth.
This came from the last visit and thankfully the grower saw some sense and put his prices up to a reasonable level. I grabbed a few figs knowing my old man would nail some, this is one I was left with. Happy with branches down low. Going to give it a go with the "high growth" method on the site here. Not sure on price but lets say this and the following 2 where around $20-$30 each.
This was the only "non Port Jackson" the grower had, so I knabbed it. I like it, its healthy and will be used for cuttings and that base growing method posted on the site.
My favorite
. I had 2 larger ones like this and my old man took the straighter trunk. This has had a trunk cut and it is nearly healed over. It needs some cleaning but has some nice lines. This will be my first one to be placed in a "bonsai pot" next season. I need one to have and learn with. This is it. The trunk it 5-6cm thick but flares under the soil so I can't wait to reveal it this weekend and have a look. I will most likely create a post next spring after a clean up and use this a "help me" project as locally the "group" scene is extinct.Sorry for the quality of the pics, taken on the iPad with setting sun behind me, just needed something for my Bonsai Log app. I wish I had a better pic of the last one as the trunk has a nice pleasant movement from quite a few angles. Can't wait to get started on that next season.
