At the 3rd Syposium on Australian Plants as Bonsai 2014
I'll be attending the 3rd Syposium on Australian Plants as Bonsai 2014 in Canberra over the weekend.
I just dropped off some trees for the exhibition. Mine were probably the least developed and not really ready for showing, but they're there.
I'll be doing a workshop with Neil Padbury (shibui) on a native on Saturday and Sunday with Grant Bowie on Podacarpus lawerencei. Aswell as great speakers and demonstrations. I'm excited.
I'll post some pics if I'm allowed to get photos and I'll update over the weekend as I'm able.

And Ive got this now. Wasn't a lot of choice for stock. All young plants and as I'm going for a bigger tree not much to do but pot it on and feed it up.

Good to get to know you and work with you Dan. I note you have a wealth of horticultural / native plant knowledge and look forward to your continuing contributions.
As with many good things, the banksia will take time to develop but I can see it being a good tree in future.

B. Serrata bulk up really well. I purchased mine as nursery stock around a year ago. It has and continues too put on trunk girth even in smaller pots. I find Serrata to be such a wonderful species to work with. They throw buds everywhere giving a myriad of styling options. They shape quite well and ramify good too. I actually believe Serrata can make very credible Bonsai in a short space of time. I trust yours will be no exception Dan.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: At the 3rd Syposium on Australian Plants as Bonsai 2014
Well it was a great weekend and my vision of regular posts and updates in the evenings went out the window as I immersed myself in bonsai heaven. The quality of the trees in the exhibition, and also the national collection I got a chance to view after the symposium had finished, are truly awe inspiring. The knowledge and ideas talked about and shared so freely and with the intent of benefitting all is still sinking in.
I am still away from home for a week doing work at my sisters place and have many photos that I won't be able to post until I get home to my computer but over the next few days I will post some of the things discussed and done over the course of the weekend. It was thoroughly enjoyable, and I was made to feel very welcome.
A huge thank you to all involved in making the weekend possible and contributing their ideas and experiences. I now see Bonsai differently to what I did a few days ago, and I know I will continue to grow artistically as well as technically with a great foundation in bonsai with Australia natives.

Hi Dan
Great to hear you had a good time - hope everyone who was there did.
Thanks to everyone who came and contributed over the weekend, and to the exhibitors- particularly inter-staters like yourself.
We had great public interest in the exhibition so it was great to have all the quality trees to show them what's possible.
- the full catalogue and photos will be up on the CBS website as soon as possible. You may have noticed it is down again... We're working on it and hope it will be back soon.
The thing I've enjoyed from these weekends (this was my second) is that people are SO willing to share - knowledge, experience and ideas.....
- All I need to do now is start applying it all to my own trees!!!
Looking forward to next year in Melbourne!
Jennifer

Though we missed the updates, I'm confident you made the right choice.dansai wrote:Well it was a great weekend and my vision of regular posts and updates in the evenings went out the window as I immersed myself in bonsai heaven.

Neil and Grant would be right at the top of my list of bonsai demonstrators I would love to see. Maybe someday I'll make it to a symposium.
Cheers, Karl

I do have photos and many ideas to share but I am on a working holiday at the moment at my sisters place which is what gave me the opportunity to attend this event. I only have my phone to post and all my pictures are on my camera except for those I have already posted from my phone. But it was a great weekend and there was much shared so I am looking forward to sharing with all when I am home and can do justice to what was an excellent event.
Again congratulations and big thank you's to all those that made it possible
