Impromptu Sunday afternoon project

Post by robc »

hi everyone,

During a visit to a local nursery, a nandina caught my eye. i liked the leaf colour and the moss (usually not what i look for in potential bonsai!) so i forked out 12 bucks and potted it in a spare bonsai pot i had at home. pretty happy with the outcome after 10 minutes of work 8-)

it doesn't really conform to any of the "rules" of bonsai, but i find it appealing regardless, therefore i dont really intend to do any training other than trimming to keep it to its current size, however inspiration for further training may strike in the years to come!

i know nandina has been used for bonsai/accent plants before. Does anyone know if they require and special treatment? can they live indoors? my only experience with nandina was in my mothers garden as a wee lad and i remember them being bulletproof!

No special treatment. As you say - bulletproof. I have had one in a little accent pot for ages. Not repotted for around 10 years, hardly ever fed but still alive and produces flowers and fruit most years. I repotted and cut it back last year because a bit more care would give better growth.
