Juniper restyle

Hey folks,

Today I did some work on juniper from the course, this was my semi-cascade and I was never happy with the initial styling, and always intended on turning it into an informal tree.

Today while looking at it and pondering, i decided to go a little further


Here's how it was after it's first styling

Love to know what you all think. I have a bit of trouble getting the tree's I photograph to look as they do in the bark, and this one comes across a bit flat in pictures, but it's close. The top jin my get a bit more shape, but I kind of get sidetracked playing with branch placement and left it half done.

Hi mate, your going to need to get on that Jinn before it dries if you want some good bends.

Overall the tree looks much better, and more suited to the size of the trunk too. Well done!

Much nicer, but for me I would reduce the top some more and shorten the top Jin

I agree with ken, much nicer tree and by shortening that top Jin improves appearance also

good rework--for what it's worth-I reckon If the jins are too long and extend far from the tree, it starts to look more like a bush--older looking trees tend to have relatively thicker but shorter jin(closer to the main trunk)

Hi Kez,
I agree with Ken about shortening that jin. What do you think of also shortening the left jin and fracturing the tips of the jins. This would get rid of the sharp points.

In the following photo I am just trying to give the idea. You most probably wouldn't fracture them as much as shown. You could make the ends a little uneven to represent the idea of them being broken.

Thanks for the input folks, some great advice!

I'm not sure what I'll do regarding the jins, I'm not overly hung up on them so they may go altogether, I think the temptation of seeing great jins on trees is to try and include them in ones own trees regardless of whether they fit or not. I'm learning that if something needs to much work to be incorporated into a design it probably doesn't fit.

More than anything I'm just happy with the tree that I get to appreciate now in comparison with what it was

I agree with your thoughts Kez.

I think the jins are looking forced and don't really add much to the style.

I do however like the style change and believe you have designed a tree that is both a pleasing image whilst not conforming to a standard "cookie cut" style.

Remember Your tree is supposed to be 3D and not 2D, Try to give depth by developing some branches behind..

Don't worry there are back branches, it just comes across flat in the photo's

Is this juniper procumbens nana? If it is as it gets older it will have adult scale foliage so please take that into account.

Did a little more work on this today,

got it sitting closer to it's intended angle and did some reduction on the jins, as well as starting some shari.
