Stand from Old Paling Fence
Inspired by Gavin's "New Stand" post recently I thought I would show my new display stand, not quite finished yet, that is made from recycled hardwood fence palings.
Its a multi step process, but once you have the palings, you then need to dress them, cut them, attach them together and then apply a finishing coat.
Hopefully I will get an opportunity to finish it in the next few days.

Very nice-have been wanting to do something like this myself. Great outcome for a waste/landfill product!!!

Excellent work. Great inspiration especially I like the fact that you are recycling wood that others will just use for landfill. You have certainly given me ideas.

Looks great Watto . Nice to see beautiful things made from material that many would only see as landfill. One of my favorite toys is my thicknerser , I love seeing the color emerge from an old grey piece of timber .

Re: Stand from Old Paling Fence
Love it mate very good finish also, one question if I may . What did you use for fixings? glue and what else?. The reason I ask I was at a show today and was asked where I get my stands?.
I have made them and I have bought them, this one is nice and I have a lot of timber off cuts lying around, Jarrah Tassie oak so I might just have to start doing some work.
Cheers Mate

Re: Stand from Old Paling Fence
Thanks for the kind comments.
Bougy - I use a thickneser and a belt sander.
Pup - I use glue and a bamboo skewer, there are no screws, nails etc in it. I intend to make a couple more and when I do I will do a step by step the way I do it, but it needs to be remembered that I am not a timber craftsman, just a wood butcher. I do really need to learn about "proper" wood joints.

I would call glued only joints more than just wood butchering!
More like cabinet making rather than just carpentry
Excellent stuff Watto.

Re: Stand from Old Paling Fence
It's funny. My father inlaw is a builder and often pulls fences down for renos. I asked him once if ki could get some palings and posts off him. His response, why they are just rubbish. So instead I picked some up from a house I saw having its fence replaced. Built a coffee table and a few other things. It is really nice wood when cleaned up.
That is a very lovely stand watto and very well made. Love the color of the finished timber.

Re: Stand from Old Paling Fence
Great work Watto, I had a very similar idea (a bit more rustic) when the house next door was demolished, unfortunately the fence disappeared before I could salvage any. Since then I've been lazy and not followed through.
So, great to see you had a great idea ... AND FOLLOWED THROUGH
... and have completed with such a nice finished result. Great work
I'm inspired once again!
Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Stand from Old Paling Fence
love old weathered timber--was lucky enough to get most of some old rough cut redgum fence rails and posts from some sheep yards-- if you have more timber, try not dressing the timber at all--then making a stand that looks like an old fence with gaps and weathered top and bottom edge https://www.google.com.au/search?q=old+ ... -----might look good with a gnarly melaleuca sitting on it

Re: Stand from Old Paling Fence
The stand was made with the idea of an Aussie native, in an Aussie made pot, on an Aussie made stand.
I think there are various "looks" achievable from the rustic to the refined. I didn't quite get the proportions correct in this one so a few slight adjustments needed but they are a work in progress.
