First olive and progression from 2012
I have used clip and grow mostly on this tree but have heard of growing out and pruning at the end of winter but I think with the rapid growth they put on you end up with some straight branches. I would like to find out more on developing branches in olives can someone lend some advice, I'm concerned I have tried to get a tree shape canopy as quickly as possible and maybe losing branch taper. Maybe I need to chop back hard before spring? would love to hear what you think. cheers

I like the last pic, I think if you can get some branching on the right hand side of the main trunk and develop the smaller tree also it will be a nice redilt

Let em grow out to about 3 or 4 feet, and then cut back hard to first internode. Then same again for one of the two new branches. Keep the other one shorter. If you repeat this three or four times, you'll get some nice thick primary branches to match up to that trunk. If you keep cutting then back too much, you'll end up wit fine think branched pads sitting on a heavy trunk. Unless that's what you want, it is probably going to be considered then lesser of the two processes. Once you have grown out and cut back a few times you'll have good thick primary branching and secondary branching with movement. You can develop the fine structure on top of those. Make sense?

You need to separate the foliage mass at the top to 2 or 3 separate pads rather than one clump of foliage.
Wire the main branch structure and clip and grow the terminal foliage later.
ps nice carving

Thanks ken and Andrew for branch structure advice, I will select some main branches and apply the techniques which makes good sense Andrew
this is a whole new concept for this tree so I'm looking forward to reviewing again in a year or so.
Cheers!

Good luck mate! Consider dropping the apex to allow that deadwood to extend above it. Otherwise the deadwood is a bit lost. Food for thought.
Keep us posted.
