Where is a good bonsai nursery/shop or nursery with a good range of bonsai in Melbourne? I've searched the internet and it hasn't come up with much. I'm pretty new to bonsai and i'm looking for something other than a ginseng ficus to work on (i've heard they're rubbish), as well as some budget tools and maybe pots.
Also has anyone any experience buying online? good/bad idea?

Thanks Brad! What's bonsai farm like? how is the range there? As i said i'm pretty new so i'm looking for something fairly easy to look after as well as something young so i can work with it over a long time. Sorry for the barrage of questions brother, I'm just really keen to find out more about this great h

I like Bonsai Orient in Reservoir. They have plenty of pots, bonsai starter plants, tools, gravel, wire etc. A good place to get started! The good thing about them is the only day they are closed is Tuesdays. So they be open right now!
The only time I went to Bonsai Farm was when it was based in the Dandenongs. I haven't been to the Hawthorn nursery. I have however purchased tools and Videos from Bonsai Farm at bonsaifarm.tv and found their service and products excellent. Well worth the money. The videos are by Lindsay Farr and are also available in shorter form on his website. Given what you see of Bonsai Farm Hawthorn in the web videos it looks like a pleasant place to visit and the trees looks excellent as well.

I would say baloc (ardeer) and bonsai sensation (SE suburbs) has the most variety of starter trees at reasonable prices.
Orient had a fair few seedlings but these take ages!
I enjoy Lindsay Farr's videos, but was a little disappointed with the bonsai farm nursery, I've visited twice in the last 12mths just to be sure. Worth a look but I felt the stock was not great and overpriced. I like bonsai sensation for quality and well priced stock and Tien the owner is very helpful and knowledgeable. Chojo feature trees is also worth a look. All the nurseries are worth a visit but they are my picks for over east.

As jase said, I find bonsai farm very overpriced. I feel he has a lot of advanced stock so it may be worth the price, but for a begginner if ur after just a few started bonsai or a couple of years old, you won't find then at bonsai farm. I find collectors corner at gardenworld , really good staff and lots of variety, everything from starters to multiple year olds for good price, they also have a discounted section with a few broken limbs. Good to practice with or just try random stuff. I havnt been to orient however do I can't compare to that

I've actually contacted this club about joining to learn more about bonsai! As I explained to David (the guy I talked to from the club) I'm in year 12 at the moment so have very very little spare time. I'll most likely come for the first meeting of 2015!
I popped down to bonsai farm today to check it out. I know what you guys mean but I managed to find some younger material (pre bonsai chinese elms and trident maples $12 each) as well as 6-7 year old cedrus deadora for $25 (which I copped). The only issue i've got with the other places is their distance from where I am. Doesn't seem to be a lot in the Glen Eira/Port Phillip area

He has great stock, pots, soil, wire the lot. His trees are top quality having been worked both roots and top. Fairly priced too
I've got a bit off him and never disappointed. He's willing to spend time with you and chat about anything bonsai.
Bonsai sensation has great range of trees at various stages. Tien and John are very helpful. Check them out if you're on the eastern side of Melbourne.
