Aphid treatment

Post by Daluke »

Hello,

My garden (both vegetable and Bonsai training trees) are under attack by Aphids.

I bought Yates vegetable dust.

Is this okay to put on everything?

Assuming Yates vegetable dust is the one with Derris (rotenone) it should be ok to use on all your plants. Note that it must be reapplied after every watering to maintain effectiveness. It will remain to be seen how effective it is on the aphids.

Ill put it out there that what you are experiencing is not aphids at all. Search "leaf hoppers" within the forums.let me know your conclusion.

These bugs fly, are green, and small. When I water they all fly up off the plants and veges!

Only a few adult aphids fly. The vast majority just stay on the stems and leaves and suck plant juice. It would be interesting to see a photo i think.

I agree with Boics, sounds like leaf hoppers - and like Shibui said, nearly all aphids don't fly so that kinda confirms it. In any case I don't think the Vege dust will do much harm, but if I am correct even simple stuff like watering the foliage can help... they don't like sitting on wet leaves!

Hi Daluke,
This is just a suggestion. Since I have been foliage feeding my Azaleas they virtually don't get and Azalea Mite. It may have the same effect on the insects you have uncounted. It certainly won't hurt the trees to try it.
Hear is the link to the article. Foliage Feeding

Look and sound familiar?

They seem to run a muck year on year now.
Populations ebb and flow with the weather.
Today will be a big day in Melbourne.

100% looks like leaf hoppers. I hope the dust works!
