Garden World, Melbourne

Best Bonsai nursery I've visited in Victoria is Garden World. Located at 810 Springvale Rd, Braeside. Huge collection of magnificent Bonsai specimens, well worth the visit even if don't buy anything. Most unique is the King st Elm tree collected from, you guessed it, King st in Melbourne during roadworks. The fully grown tree was cut down to size and carved into a mountain scene, it is quite remarkable. See you there!

It is indeed a great place to visit and the 'not for sale trees' are inspirational in a lot of cases. Last time I was there I found that the 'for sale' trees were way overpriced and not of great quality. But bargains can be found and it has a great range of products on display. I think if you look around for people who are growers the quality can be much better.

i have to agree there, i much prefer to buy of private sales, the prices are/can be similar to retail but i have found better quality in stock!

That is the best monterey i have seen Full stop! mind warping in person. Thier display trees and Thier material is some of the best around and most reasonably priced for what it is. Not to say on the wrong day you might be dissapointed if really desperate to drop a dollar. Usually good quality pots at good prices also. Great guy by the name of Bruce always willing to chat and help. Knows his bonsai stuff too!!! One of my favourite days out. :D

Antonio,
Yes, Yes and Yes. That Radiata is brilliant. Easily the best I have seen too. Bruce is a legend, loves a chat, is very helpful and knowledgable. I'm not sure of whats happening with the renovations, would be a shame if the Bonsai area was reduced to the size it is at now. It was absolutely perfect, every tree had its own space and could be appreciated individually. At the moment it is all very cramped.

Hi,

There is a rather young gentleman whose name is Chris -- he has sold my father several signed Japanese
pots which are not usually on display :)

They are locked up at the back somewhere. My father always took what he showed him too.

I like the cafe there too -- Chelsea beach is not too far away either, around 20 minutes straight-down
Springvale Road. Too the best beach in Victoria, but it is still very nice.

Cheers.

I agree with Ash re the price and quality of the trees. Some of the display trees at Bonsai Art in Heatherton are comparable with the Gardenworld collection and the trees for sale are way better. Those of you in Sydney and Brisbane would be gobsmacked at the value for money.

Cheers,
Mojo

I have been blessed to see some amazing radiata's but that big old one is my favourite of all time!!! Yes Bonsai Art is right up there too, although i haven't been there in a long time. Like Garden world, on the wrong day it can be dissapointing. Personally speaking i have purchased more good trees at good prices from garden world than any other nursery in Vic. Some i dont even bother visiting any more. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Last time I was there Bruce told me the renovations are due to the Bus company out the back needing better access, maybe they own the land?? They are moving the side wall in a few metres. I believe the cacti garden is to be relocated to the back of the complex? That would still leave plenty of room for bonsai.

The old radiata at garden world was grown by Dot King who was one of the early BSV members.

Judging by the amount of chain and locks on the monterey pine must mean it's not for sale.
