Noob School...My first attempt

Post by Rustdust »

OK guys here it is, I've spent my New Years afternoon/evening having a crack at this Juniper, now no doubt I have made every design flaw under the sun as I have left the 2 lowest branches on even though they are shorter than the branches above them, keep in mind that this is my very first attempt at everything, pruning, shaping, wiring etc. I'm kind of stuck because I'm not sure what to do with the top of the plant as the main trunk splits 3 ways, so do I need to make 2 of these branches dead wood and leave 1 as my main branch? I'm really not sure.
Anyway take a look and criticism is more than welcome because how else am I going to learn :)

Cheers

Although a tree is a thousand Chang in height, its leaves still fall to the ground.

You are correct, there is too much happening at the top with several strong branches. You need to be patient and not remove too much at one time. See how the tree responds to what you have done.
At this stage select the worst of the 3 top branches and remove half of it
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

OK Gerard thanks for the input, I figure since its had over 130 views and only one reply it can only be an unspeakable massacre :palm:
Maybe I should remove the wire and let it go for a while, its just I like to get my hands dirty :)

Haha, easy Tiger!
The students are many and the teachers are very busy... People like me who are busy learning and trying very hard not to kill our trees or butcher them horribly, read an study what's on offer! Some venture an opinion.
Besides, this is. Not my species so it would be of no benefit me commenting!
I don't like the too - to me it seems to have terminated the apex. Can I tell you how to correct it, not with any authority. You've taken the first couple I steps (having a go AND asking or guidance) that's the only way to move forward! Keep it up and let's see where you take this tree!
Thank you for sharing.

Yeah I have no idea what to do with the top, I was just going to roll with what Gerard said but Melbourne is about to have a short heat wave so I've just left it for now.
