New olive and some virtuals.

Hi, I have a new olive and I've been mucking about with it in Photoshop, which one do you like? ( if any), also I'd like to see any other ideas that anyone has for this tree.

Ozzy nice to see you here . I like broomy best it depicts the tree more as an olive. The Japanese Pine look is far to severe. The tall broom does not convey the same feeling as Broomy. JMO though and Welcome Pup

Your verts are all nice, however they dont really look like Olives! Have you or would you consider a cutting this trunk back to 3 or 4 inches above the basel flare and turn it into a shohin sized tree? Just a thought, the tree has to little taper to leave at that height. Another option would be to train a branch about 3/4 the way up the trunk as a leader and form your whole canopy out of that branch/leader and do some really radical type of carving to the tree above that point. If you went that way it would create (IMO) a more realistic OLIVE tree. I will see if i can dig up an example for you as i may not be explaining this all that well.
Just as a side note to this also, i dug about 10 or so Olives just recently (July i think it was) and run out of time towards the end when i was preparing them all, by myself, so instead of making up anything special to plant them in as i have done in the past, i put them in straight Diatomite. Best success with Olives i have ever had, i lost some really great trunks out of the last lot i collected. I will post a few pics of them for you in a different thread. I have only been collecting Olives for 18 months or so, so i really havent any great expieriance with them but i thought that that was interesting.

You will note Jon the inside of the curve!! I am not sure if you get Bonsai Europe which is now Bonsai Focus. There are a Lot of Olives in the magazine. Also if you have access to the best of Bonsai in Europe you will see some truly magnificent olives in them. Pup

I like broomey the best too, when I first started bonsai I was taught that everything had to be a pine style like Japanesy no matter what the species so all of my first olives are done like this but they still look OK , now I do different styles but I will still use the japanese pine style on olives again, probably a full on carved virtual would be good too, I should have a go at that
I probably have about twenty olives now, down from my halcyon days of about fifty, but I'm in the process of moving to a bigger place now so I might just build those stocks up again.

No they're not mine but i wish they were! Those olives were entries to the Ginko Bonsai Awards.
I should have taken photos of the olives that were at the SA show. They were pretty impressive.
