I thought i would share the up and down life of one of my favourite trees.A Squamata Juniper.
I first bought the tree from a bonsai nursery in Melbourne about 6/7 years ago,Sadly i never took a picture of the tree when i first got it.It was a informal upright style stock tree, left right left right kind of branches.
After only a month of having the tree it slowly started to die from the top branch all the way to the base branches.Looking back i think Rot might have be root rot as i only ever sprayed with lime sulphur.
All but one branch died.trying to make the most of the bad situation,i turned all the dead branches and trunk into jins. After another year half of the tail of the now cascade tree started to die in the same manor.I removed it then repotted the tree. The soil was in bad shape so i think that was the problem all along.
Since then the tree has gone from strength to strength..I am still looking for a slightly smaller pot which i think would complement the tree a little more.below are the pics
after repotting
after branch shortening
First time showing at the qld bonsai show 2012
Photo used for the selection into the aabc 2014 convention,(its a better photo than the one i have from the convention)

Mate, from an average tree to a beautiful specimen. Amazing effort, but we must give the style direction credit to the tree itself. It just wanted to be more! Haha.
Good work and a great little tree.
Thanks for posting.

There are many ways to do things, but only one "best" way.

I've seen some pretty mediocre trees in my time (most of them are in my backyard) but this is NOT one of them. Really is a beauty, and goes to show... imagination and vision can come even when things don't go entirely to plan. This is the kind of thing I strive to create one day. Thanks for the inspiration.

Very nice
Now that it is growing so well, have you considered splitting the foliage mass into two tiers as the foliage is getting a bit heavy?

Thanks for the kind words, the tree defiantly had a mind of its own.Glad i could help it along the way.
Yes Edward,my next prune I get some division between the pads, not too much negative space though as a tree of this size i think needs a lot of foliage.
Cheers
