Tilting Swivel Base Stand

Thanks to the Queen's birthday today, and because there is not much to do on my trees at the moment I decided to make myself a you-beaut tilting swivel based bonsai stand. I saw one at our last bonsai meeting at Nepean Bonsai Society here in Penrith, which had been "whipped-up" and thought I would make one for myself.

I decided to create a square one using the largest lazy Susan bearing I could find at Bunnings, together with some 9ml marine ply and a couple of brass piano hinges.

In order for pots to handle the tilt I added a couple of timber edges on the lower sides which seems to work fine. Now I just need to give it a paint with some oil/stain and it is ready to go.

It really didn't take long for anyone thinking of making one.

Looks good. How large is it & it's weigh? As I need one but weight is an issue as I've got a bad shoulder.

Cindy, not sure of the weight. I've tried to keep the weight to a minimum using the 9mm marine ply so I can carry it around. Basically the weight of the four sheets of wood.

Truth, it is basically a lazy Susan, 310mm x 310mm with two additional layers. The two additional layers are hinged in opposing directions (see chicks holding them up) to allow lift. I have a small video which I will try & load which is clearer.

It's not heavy at all, since he used the 9mm marine ply - which is the minimum you need to prevent the warping of the wood (don't forget to paint it too). With the size of some of your trees you could actually go a bid bigger than 31cm x 31cm and it still wouldn’t be too heavy to carry!

Cindy, I weighed it and it is 3.5kg. Also very compact when not in use it is just over 3" high.
