Not sure if this browning is normal or not??
We are in the middle of winter.
Is my soil too wet?

Re: Hinoki Help
How long ago did you prune and wire?
Had a similar looking tree which I wired, and slowly started losing foliage / branches (without repotting), put it down to the tree not liking wiring or was too hard on the tree. My soil was fairly wet as well, but was the same that the tree was bought in.. Have one branch remaining, going to leave to grow and see what happens, think will repot this spring into a more freely draining soil mix (without touching roots too much).
Hopefully your tree will shoot as mentioned by Brian, until then keep an eye on the watering.

Re: Hinoki Help
I just potted it into better soil. I just noted the underside of the leaves are greener than the top.

Re: Hinoki Help
Update - April 2016
Looking back it looks like a different tree.
I've wired up a few Hinoki - 2 out of 3 didn't make it. You are looking at the lone survivor.
These things seem pretty fussy.

Re: Hinoki Help
Hi Daluke,
Looking better now.
Just a tip, do not keep wet when cold & especially do not water in the evening in winter. Otherwise they are fine, albeit, slow.
Regards,
Black Knight

Re: Hinoki Help
Looking good
My tree I mentioned earlier just never recovered. I purchased a new one short time back, nursery stock larger than before. Any suggestions on timing for initial pruning, should I open up now to let light in or wait for spring?

Re: Hinoki Help
I love the foliage on the Hinoki.
My experience and success rate isn't the best - hopefully someone else can answer your question.
I think frost protection is important with these and gradual shaping helps reduce shock. I'm not looking forward to repotting. Hopefully this one makes it through.
