New ficus, with blacked base. Is this normal?

Post by bonsai_beginner »

Hey guys
I just got a new ficus, however once I got it and removed the top pebbles off it, I noticed the base of the trunk and the roots were quite black.

Is this common at all?
Here are some photos Image

It might just be from moss, liverwort or slime on the surface while it was in the nursery. Were there any of these on the surface when you got it?

Give a small part of the blackened bark a small scratch and see if it is healthy fresh green beneath.

likely just "dirt", as it was covered for so long
Acer buergerianum, Acer palmatum, Bougainvillea (something), Ficus microcarpa, Lagerstroemia indica 'Fauriei', Melaleuca styphelioides, Olea Europa, Prunus (something) 'Dwarf Apricot', Quercus robur, Ulmus parvifolia, Zelkova serrata

not a good time to repot figs in Melbourne at this time of the year, so I hope you have a glasshouse.

I bring them inside the house at around 4:30pm and then take them out at around 11am

Could also be too much watering in the nursery ,in cold weather......

I was told if they are inside once the temp drops it is okay.

Oh! Too much water can also lead to blackened trunk? I'll keep an eye out for that on my other ficus' too

Thank you
