Flowering quince

Have a flowering quince only about 3 flowers have opened and the others are swelling some leaves also
When to repot and how much to prune off roots and branches ?

depend largely on the trees development state, typically you will repot any before leaf bud or the flowers open.
you could do so now if you do not care about the flowers
1/3 -1/2 of the roots can be removed, ad depending on the individual tree, maybe more.

You can still repot flowering quince when it is flowering. They are pretty tough so up to half the roots should be safe.
Some people wait until after the flowers to repot, even if there are some leaves opening. Root pruning with leaves on the tree is not necessarily a death sentence as many are finding out. Quite a few of us have been repotting trees in full leaf in summer and early autumn with no ill effects.

When one says a flowering quince, is that a Japanese quince or a Chinese quince or neither ?

Most people refer to Japanese quince (Chaenomeles species and hybrids) as Flowering quince. I guess that's because the flowers are so conspicuous in late winter before the leaves even start to open.
The giveaway in this thread is the reference to flowers open before the leaves.
