Best time for JBP Styling

Post by badabing888 »

Hi Guys,

A quick question, what is the general consensus as far as the best time for doing that initial design, major branch removals for JBP's.
The one in question is in good health has been repotted for a full year and won't need to be done for another 1-2 years and is budding like crazy etc.

So what time of year is the best to really make a few bigger cuts to kick off its proper design, make it's final trunk chop, start to thin the longer needles, cut back branches to fit the style which is chosen, in short transition the plant from 8-9 year old stock material with some of the larger branches already chosen to the ramification, proper design phase

Any help on the timing of year to do this would be great

Early to mid winter when there is less sap movement and less bleeding
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Best time of year to style JBP is whenever you have the tree and tools close together and a bit of time for the procedure. Maybe wait until December to prune then candle cut or shorten back whatever is left after pruning.

HI,

Thanks guys!

I might try refine it a little more before sitting down late winter and taking the rest of the branching and apply a little wire, not rush as they say but i'm getting itchy to style this thing!

Depends where you live ,I guess,in Sydney, or lower mountains,or even on the northern beaches,I have found the best time to rootprune ,trim, shape, wire, etc, is when I have the time.In our climate, we can do all these things easily, with due care, and decent very coarse potting mix. After care is the prerequiste for survival.Trim, prune, wire and shape, rootprune, in that order, and you will have success.I've been doing for nearly 37years,and never lost a tree yet.......
