Is this a special type or is it grafting or something?

hi Reece
it is a specific variety of Satsuki azalea(don't know the actual name). i managed to source a small stock plant of this variety earlier this year. will be taking cuttings of it in the coming years.

Make sure the cuttings are from the multicoloured branches, otherwise you'll get red or white.

An amazing amount of work to create something like that :worship: whether we like it or not you have to admire the skill level.

Absolutely love it. With different amounts/levels of fertiliser, light, humidity, moisture etc. etc. they produce different shades of colours to. Very complex plant.
Something interesting I found out recently...The satsuki and other bonsai masters in Japan don't mix with each other.... :shake:

Here is two of my babies. This is the only two with distinct colour variation. I have others that are very faint but showing signs of that. With better horticultural practice they can only improve. That is what makes them so exiting I think. You never know what you get until they open...
They are small but their flowers are huge (in stature) to anybody that can appreciate it. Cant wait for them to open every year.. :tu:

Another example. I'm still learning about satzuki. Don't even know why this happens. We are still getting to know each other, so for me there is exiting times ahead.... :reading:
First pic is this year and the second is from last year. See the colour difference (looks more dramatic because of the cell camera. Its actually just slightly different) This year it also has a darker stripe in the flower... :o
