Dwarf English Elm Layers

A few months ago when Bougy Fan was down in Sydney for a big day out, we did the rounds of the nurseries in the northwest and I picked up a Dwarf English elm from Ray Nesci.
How is yours doing in Brissy Bougy?

It needed a few layers which I put on the second last day of School beginning of December.
They did really well and had lots of roots showing so I took them off last week and remebered to grab some photos. ( sorry forgot to get some before pics tho

I took off 3 layers altogether
this one will hopefully become a Shohin size broom style tree.

Another layer is a little larger and was layered to be planted on a slant to give initial movement out of the ground for interest.

IMHO the only style trees that come vertically out of the ground shoud be Formal uprights and Broom styles, All other shodu leave the ground at an angle to provide interest in the lower trunk.
If you are layering stock, think about doing so at an angle to help the eventual design.

When I sever the layer, i remove the stump from und3r the roots of possible as it will need to be removed at some time in the trees life if you want to get it inot a small pot, so might as well do it first up when access is easier.
Just beware of damaging tender roots while you do it.

Note that I will let the upper trunk go mad to put on some girth for a year, then cut back hard as a second trunk chop.

It is going OK - I probably am babying it a little and should get it out in a bit more sun. So far it seems to be surviving - I should have bought that one you have. I did see it first

Thanks for the tutorial, its a good reminder for and or good learning process depending on where you are on the bonsai merry go round.
