Air layering Azaleas??

Any of you have got any experience air layering Azaleas and are willing to share?

Actually have on on now on a Satsuki

Trreat them just like any deciduous Layer and shod be fine.

Cut a ring around the bark and pot up into a propagating mix. Keep moist adn 6- 10 weeks shoud be good to take off.

Look up the aerial layering techniques and follow their advise for exotics. after 6 or so weeks check it.

Hence my Bonsai age is 0 because i'm only new and have only been cultivating bonsai a month or so

One thing I notice Jordy for some one so young in Bonsai. You use the correct term for Bonsai as a verb or as a noun.

No bloody S on the end it is not BonsaiS never is never will be.

Propagating mix, not Spagnum Moss?
Probably a bit early on this side of the ditch to start. Do you take any of the flowers off from the branch that you air layer to conserve energy?

My Propagating mix is usually Peat Moss, Sharp propagating sand, Chopped Spagnum moss
So yes Put some Spgnum on first, then fill the pot with sharp sand / moss mix


I always take off any flowers or buds on the whole tree, not just on the section to layer

Thanks Ken,

i see you are using a pot and not any plastic wrap? I suppose this a 75-100 mm pot.How do you seal the top?

Also, the branches I want to air layer are probably 4-5 years old. They all come from the base. By air layering I'll get some nice trunks.

The plant was totally rootbound so I had to repot it.

Same with a Wisteria I want to chop. 4-5 years old.

Are they o.k for this procedure?

BoNZai you can just use the sphagnum, on top of the pot this will give you some idea as to the dryness of the medium.
As you need to keep it moist at all times I have found on branches ( depending on the position on the tree ) are better taken with the poly wrap procedure.
The Azalea's I have done have been very successful using both methods and, ring barking them.
When doing multiple Bonsai layer's, with the poly wrap, it pays to have a syringe so that you can inject some moisture into the medium if it is drying out.

I use the plastic wrp method if I do not have ready access to the tree to water and monitor it, or is in a awkward posit.

Like pup says both methods need to be damp and with the pot method, you have to monitor it and water daily or so

the pot is whatever size needs to be to give me about 2 inches of soil around the trunk.
Wisteria shod be cool too to layer as well
wait till after flowering ( or remove them) and then layer.
