Port Jackson Fig

Hello everyone! Can you please assist / confirm / correct/ clarify for me?!?
So I have two port Jackson figs that were root bound so I waited till December and I repotted in two colanders training pots and cut back hard at the same time...so far so good i had lots of new growth and plenty of new shoots...
Yesterday I decided to select some branches for development and cut the rest... is this the correct procedure? Am I doing the right thing?

Any help greatly appreciated!!!

There are lots of ways you could approach these figs but what you are doing will be good.
Figs bud all over so you will need to remove any surplus shoots and start to shape chosen branches into desired shape and position which I assume is what you have now done.
Figs growth habit is long, unbranched shoots. Usual procedure is to allow the branches to grow 5-6 leaves then cut back so it will make some side shoots.
There are other fig techniques you can use at other times.

Thank you Shibui! I haven't allowed the shots to grow to 5/6 leaves before trimming I assume to leave 1 or 2 leaves? What happens if I cut to early the branch?

I find I just don't get much ramification. Cut 1 shoot when it is small and get just 1 new shoot. Let 1 shoot grow longer then cut and get 2 or 3 side shoots from it.
As I said, lots of ways to do it. If you're getting good results keep doing it.

But if I let the branch grow to 5/6 leaves wouldn't the internodes be longer? and how many leaves would you leave when cutting back 1 or 2 ?

Yes the internodes can get longer, but usually the first one is smaller.
I like to leave mine while developing, till they are about 3 sets of leaves then cut back to the firt one or 2.

A tree in final maintenance you trim earlier and or pinch the tips to keep them under control
