No goods Priced!!!

Post by Jester »

Hi guys, today I went to a nursery in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Apparently it's been there for years but I only just found out about it. Eassy to see why, no signs and just a driveway leading up to the back of what would appear to be a residential premises. It is not a Bonsai nursery,it is retail/wholesale. It is quite large with much of the space being occupied by seedlings. There are also herbs, fruit trees and shrubs. What frustrated the hell out of me was that fact that nothing was priced. Ok, ok, yes I have been to the odd Bonsai nursery where "some" trees were not priced, but here, not a single plant was priced. Maybe I'm sounding naive, but can anyone tell me why some nurseries persist with this juvenile practice.??? If you think I am going to keep coming up to the counter and asking "How much is this mate"............sorry!!!

Hi Jester,
When I visit either a new nursery or one where I know prices are not shown, I always make sure I take a particular car, wear my worst clothes and look my grubbiest (isnt hard for me)
A good tactic....

Where was the nursery you are talking about.....cmon stop teasing us :D
Regards
Steve

Did you bother asking why things weren't priced by any chance....? Seems like a little conversation and a few subtle hints could have helped you and the nursery ;)

If they were mostly a wholesale nursery, perhaps they simply don't need to price stuff? I mean... maybe they just grow X number of whatever, and sell it for $X to a nursery. If so, wandering around putting little price tags on everything that's just going to get sold in bulk is a waste of time and resources.

I hate prices tagged on your wallets instead of the goods. I usually don't come back to those places.
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

I agree jester except that as stated being whole sale there may be no need?

I refuse to buy a pie from the shops that don't show the prices. If it isn't worth advertising the price it can't be too good. I am over getting slugged $4 for a plain meat pie
Especially when the owner is selling pre packaged pies from a tuck shop and sits on their ass all day instead of making their own.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Ahhhh... come on everyone.... do something constructive about your bitch. Don't get offended, get clever. Keep flagging the shop assistant to you and ask a price. Then move to another row and another plant and ask the price, then again and again, then back to the first one and keep doing it until they get disgusted. If enough of us adopt this practice we might change this obnoxious habit. It's as bad as finding an unpriced tree in or next to sale trees only to be told 'it's not for sale'. To me that's a red rag to a bull. And a great disincentive to shop at that establishment.

Good one mel, im with you. the wholesalers get so anoide when you have to ask the price always. But even then some are to thick to acknowledge what is happening, they ( some of them) dont do anything about it. I beleive they just make up the price as they go along. I say this cause my sis and i asked the price on the same plant but were told different amounts. What do you recon. :?: This happens all too often at the markets also.

As you know i run a small and modest nursery in the Central highlands in Victoria and, at the moment, a lot of my stock is not priced. During repotting time and especially this time of year styling is taking place and changes to the tree are also taking place. Usually the price tag, mine are anyway, are attached to a branch that might be getting worked on so it has to come of. Also, if the tree has not been evaluated, price wise, for several years a re-evaluation could be taking place. As i run the nursery on my own, time is of the essence. It takes me 3-4 hours every day just in watering duties. It is usually my wife(bless her heart) who helps me write out the new tags for the trees (as her handwriting is far superior to mine). She is a nurse so i have to pin her down to help out. Also, tags fade with watering and sunshine and have to be replaced. These are just some of the things i encounter in running a nursery. But... i am always available for a chat and discussion on a tree that you may wish to add to your collection. Actually, i love talking to potential customers and chatting about our common passion. So if you ever visit me dont be to hasty to judge as you might be missing out on making a very good friend who, like you, love what they do. In this world of to many people we should make a little more effort to create a smooth road for ourselves and the people we meet in our lives. I also enjoy walking, and talking with people who visit whether they buy a tree or not because i love what i do and the opportunity to meet someone who i dont know. So, please, if you visit me, and i dont beat you to it, come over introduce yourself and enjoy our common connection.
Kindest regards,
Diederik, owner, Bodhidharma Bonsai.

Have no doubt, sir, that if I'm ever within a bulls roar of your property, I'll be stopping by :)

I was reading all through your Bodhidharma website a little while ago, and am very keen to come and see. Looks like a wonderful place to practice my Wing Chun too :D
