cresent pots? where do i aquire them?

Post by Jamie »

hey people,

i am after a cresent pot for a juniper, it will be a while before i need it but i would like to start looking now to decide on what will be best for it, i am thinking a cresent pot or half egg style. i think it will need a more rugged look to it because i intend on this juniper having lots of dead wood and twists and turns, quite a gnarly trunk in general :D something that doesnt have the cresent to high but not low either. i can show a pic of my tree yet because there is nothing to show as of yet :D

i think the other option would be a rugged style free form round pot. either way a brown red earthy tone would be nice, unglazed.
if any one has any pictures of something like this and where they aquired it would be great :D

thanks in advance

regards jamie :D

actually on the topic of free form pot, i was just searching the site and found this viewtopic.php?f=29&t=881 it is a great pot, i love it. i think something like this would work well, would just have to be a bit smaller than that size

In my opinion Pat Kennedy makes some of the best pots on the market. he is on this forum as PATK, hit him up, have a talk with him and see what comes of it.

Indeed! He is very helpful and likely willing to make/post some if you inquire nicely :D

I've seen many of his pots (particualrly at Island Bonsai in Tas) and they are absolutely brilliant :D

I encourage you to PM him :D or possibly Email.

Janet Selby also makes some very good looking freeform pots. Steven (the big boss Steven) posted some info on her work recently. Might be worth checking out.

Jamie,
I make cresent pots up to about 45 cm round. I will go and take a photo of one I have just about ready to go in the kiln. Here is one for now. It is now planted with a Blueberry ash. This one is glazed with a matt glaze to look like sandstone, the new one will be a dark biscuit colour with a rough surface. I think you have one of my first scresent pots that you won at a Craig Cousins workshop.

Thanks Brett,
I think I got the last lot out of order. I now have my new kiln, just need to find the fine to fire it, as I want to be with it the whole 1st firing.
this is the pot that will be fired next week after I get back from the pottery seminar I am attending on the Sunshine coast.
we have been moving into our new house this weekend and I just am having a little break before I go back to it. Hopefully after this I will be able to settle down and do lots of pottery and Bonsai.

Crescent pots are part of my regular stock and come in several sizes as well as custom orders. I also make other shapes which could also be suitable for your tree.

hey people,

watto, thanks for the leads, i will check it out :D

lynette, your pots look lovely, i like the look of that leaf shape pot i think something like that with a slightly higher end will suit this juniper well :D and i dont have any cresent pots lynette, unfortunately, but want a couple obviously :D so i dont think it was me that won one of your first cresents, wish i did though :D

penny, as i was perusing through the site i seen one of your pots you made for a big fig, with alot of stark white deadwood, it has a similar glaze with the lichen imitation on it, i am really liking the look of this lichen glaze :D

in penny's picture aray pict0006 the middle line i am liking alot, i think maybe a deeper red/burgandy/brown (does that make sense? :D ) tone would suit this tree well! :D

i also found a leaf pot by PK on his site that looked like it would suit the tree well too, so many decisions, so hard to choose :? :D better lots to choose from then none.
if i may penny and lynette, would you have websites you could please link me too with your galleries? if you have them? that would be really appreciated :D

thank you all for the time you have taken to put into this thread :D i take it you are all ok with online transactions? and posting pots? i hope so, i can see buying several of you :D

i think i will have to draw some designs of where this tree will be so i can get a clearer picture of the pot i need :D i will post the drawing as soon as i get it done and am happy with it :)

regards jamie :D

edit- i forgot to say this tree is not going to be any higher than 20-30cm high, so as potters what size pot of this style would you reccomend ???

ok everyone, here is the the drawing of the tree i want to get to, right now it does just look like a shrub, i like to be forward planned. it will be a couple of yeras before i get it to this stage as fusing and styling is gonna take this long. the drawing is from the actual lines the tree presents. i think it will require something a little bit more informal and rugged than neat and clean. thats just my personal opinion for the design of the tree. it is only going to be small of shohin size like i think i stated. hopefully i can get it to 20cm or so, this is the overall finished height i would like it :D

regards jamie :D

ps. please excuse the messiness of the outside of the drawing.
