Acer Platanoides!

I finally have my favourite tree in seed!
Acer Platanoides - Crimson King Maple
arrived just today!

I have them in luke-warm water to sit for 24hrs
to check which will germinate.

once they've sat for 24hrs, should I:

• take the seeds sitting on the bottom and plant them in Moss Peat And Propagation Sand (1:1)?
• should i be utilising stratification?
• is there some other way i should be going about propagating them? please share!

P.S. should I leave the rest of the seeds til they sink too?

when i proagated my japanese maple seedlings i began in winter by soaking them over night, drainingthem, then putting them in the frindge in slightly moist potting soil then left for maybee two months in the fridge. after that i pulled them out and spread the soil over the top of another layer of soil in a pot. i had around 100% success rate with this.the other day i seperated the seedlings from the single pot into individual tubes. from a pack of 50 seeds i now have around 70 maples haha

So you used Stratification.

Ok, would this work halfway through spring however?
I'm not sure what time of year is correct for stratification...

would be fine i rekon stratification is to simulate winter so i guess it doesnt have to be winter to do it.

i have trident maple seeds stratifying in the fridge as we speak. they have been in there for about a month now. given another 1-2 months and they will be put into a propagation mix. i have done this with my climate as i have a very different climate here in queensland that you do to tasmania. depending on how hot your summer will get. you could probly just put them into the propagation mix without stratifying in the fridge if it gets cold enough down there.

already found it

wasn't sure if the propagation/germination methods changed for a rarer cultivar of maple.

nope. not that i know of, the trident seeds i bought came with instruction for japanese maple varieties on propagation

Hi Guys,

I have planted out quite a few acer seedlings and i have found that the best way is to just put them in the prop mix in winter as then they have the most time to grow.

I would just put them in the soil and get them growing.

I've placed a singular Seed in a 'Peat Pot' (handy little things! a flat packed seed basket essentially,
placed in water for 2 mins expands and place seed in then cover over with spare peat)

The Rest (14) i have in a Glad seal bag in a Prop Sand/Moss Peat 1:1 mix, in the top of the fridge in the shed

Stratting!
1) I'll move them to the bottom shelf in a week,
2) then back up for another,
3) then i should check seed growth progress?

is this roughly the right procedure for stratification?
please steer me in right direction!

i havent moved mine at all up or down in the fridge. just kept them on the top shelf...
didnt get any instruction on moving them. ohwell looks like they have had a cold winter.

they have about another... ummm, i forgot when i put them in lol, the calander i marked must have been thrown out

october third i started the stratification process. i will give them another month or so and then put them into a propagation mix
