What kiln do you use?

I bought this kiln from eBay on an impulse without doing much research for it http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0426984374 . It is in good condition but I don't even know if it is of a good price or if it is any good for fire bonsai pots. Please advice! If it's no good, I'll try to resell it on eBay.
Please also show your kiln so that I know what are being used out there.

im no potter by any means, but i think i read some where pots are fired at a higher heat than that, some where around 1600 celcius.

but dont qoute me on it as i got no experience with it, im sure you will get some guidance from our experienced potters

as for size wise, it looks like you will be in the market for shohin pots

My understanding was that earthen ware pots are fired between 1100-1150 celsius?

lol jamie y're right. shohin pots

. Looks like the biggest pot I could fire in it is around 25 cm as it is only 30cm wide and 35cm deep. I like making small pots as the big ones are not economical since clay is expensive here. I Know a pot dealer who imported big pots from overseas. I can get 120cm x 80cm rectangular pot from him for $80 (sold for around $250 in some pottery yards/nurseries). The Australian bonsai grower also gets pots from this guy. If you are not too far from Oxley (Southside), I can show you to him sometimes.

Edit - just check again: 34cm wide and 30cm deep. I may be able to fire a pot of diameter ~30 cm (allow 4cm for expansion of hot clay)

there ya go earthen ware might be alright?? like i said i only think i remember reading around 1600c.

mate i think i am a bit far from the southside of bris by about 5 hours, im in hervey bay, looking for work though, brisbane will probly be one place i will be looking into so ya never know?

cant wait to see ya shohin pots

ya might even get a couple of sales from me

Thanks jamie. I actually didn't intend to sell any pot that I will make at all. I suddenly like the art of making pots. They are for me and my friends. Therefore If I do make some that fit your liking, you certainly could have a couple for free or maybe you could pay just for the clay and postage

You might just scrape in with Stone ware. 5A Red is a common glay and stone ware for it is 1300. I use the clubs kiln which was home made.

I would like a little Kiln like this to fire small amounts of pots. I think it makes experimenting a bit easier

Hey DK,

Your kiln may not be ideal but better than my first effort. When I started pottery, an Italian friend convinced me that a second-hand pizza oven would be perfect for firing my pots!!
Your kiln will be fine for smallish earthenware (terracotta) pots at 1100*C....I imagine frosts aren't a big deal in your area.

Lol. Pat, you got a pizza oven to make pots and now I have a ceramic kiln that is only good enough to make ... pizzas. How ironic

Anyway, I'll give this pizza oven a go and see how good the pizzas it makes.

BRETTS, do you think I can still make some good small pots like yours? Can I still try glaze and crack effects...? I love your pots!!!

Nathan, I'd be hounored. There are not many Ausbonsai members around here. As a newbee to bonsai, I'd love to learn from others.

For sure Kvan nothing stopping you from those effects. I think Paper clay is a bout 1250 that might be worth looking into?
The only factor as PK explained is that pots that earthenware is able to absorb water still so if it then freezes it can crack and destroy the pot.
I tend to like earthenware pots I think the trees like them better.

if and when i get the chance to come down to bris i will catch up with ya's all

it could even be easier soon i might be moving down that way, more work oppertunity down there, and the pay can be better, here where i am its slave labour
