Kunzea parvifolia
I have just finished wiring this Kunzea . I’ll leave the wire on over winter . In summer they grow to quick to bother wiring much .

Its got a lot of movement (in all directions) and I like it.
Are Kunzea's the Australian version of junipers?

Maybe but junipers with flowers. Lovely small purple pompoms in spring.
Mine don't like to bud on bare wood so I have learned to keep pruning or they get way out of control really quick. Regular hedge trimming gives quite dense foliage.

Re: Kunzea parvifolia
I don’t know . A lot of the ones I’ve seen as bonsai have gnarly trunks with sparse foliage at the ends . Some back bud better than others but they are not good at it .

Re: Kunzea parvifolia
I've come back to this thread a number of times over the past 24 hrs... and this last photo is a beauty, I reckon. If bonsai is about the perception of age - this trunk does it for me - what a cool little trunk with a lot of character in the bark. Slender with subtle taper too. Is it a relatively young tree Sno?
As an aside, I note the comment about hedge trimming (I almost feel dirty writing it in the context on bonsai ).... my forests (in development) go nuts after a trim with shears (yep).... my Swamp Paperbarks and Moonah too. Kunzea are much faster to grow than Moonah but both of these species seem reticent to back bud on old wood (in my experience). Swampy's seems to back bud like rabbits... as do River Gums... albeit the river gums don't get sheared - I just break the branches (not clip).

Tending bonsai teaches me patience.

Re: Kunzea parvifolia
Very funky, well played. I like the way that the lines of the trunk move effortlessly into the branches and fine branching - a lot of intense work without it turning out looking like a formula. I have trouble with how to harmonise the trunk with the branches, and this has given me some good idea-fuel.
Please keep posting it,

Haha Aren't we all. While I was playing tickle time with my 6 year old daughter she turned to me yesterday and goes.... 'Daddy, you need a shower.'
Nice tree Sno. One thing that is good about isolation is spending more time with your trees.
Take care mate.
Rory

Very nice tree Sno, I've never heard of this species before but I am definitely intrigued. I love the way you have shaped the trunk it looks very natural and the branches even more so.

Hi MJL . It’s roughly 8 years from tubestock .it has grown most of that time in a pond pot . My growing season is shorter than most .

Re: Kunzea parvifolia
This one got away on me this year and was flowering it’s head off . I’m repotting at the moment so I spent time bringing it back to shape . The native bees were a bit disappointed in me .

Such a pretty tree when it's flowering, and when it's not. I love all the curves in trunk and branches!
