I see da cedar while walking the dog
In November 2017 I was walking the pooch and noticed a little seedling underneath some old cedar in the neighbourhood. It is the first and only seedling I have ever seen under these trees. I went back and dug it up. I thought these photos were long gone but I do this hobby with my step-dad and had sent him an email with a few photos on the day. Here they are.
Anyway - here it is today. I nearly sold the little fella at a club sale day but as I was putting it into the car ... I thought better of it and I am glad. I am really enjoying looking after this little survivor. Yeah, I could have ground grown to get some faster growth and more girth but I didn't! Instead I play a patient game. Even this young I can see a fine future for it.

Thanks for the post Mark, nice to see where trees started and how they are coming along. You are seeing the benefits of starting small already, no big cut backs, no need to be regrowing taper back into branches for a decade just to make the transitions less jarring, no having to look at massive scars that will be obvious for decades to come. All in all of say the lack of size in the trunk is a trade many would be willing to make to not have to deal with issues that come from fast grown trees.
I’m out with a project maple right now, throwing wire at it not to place branches, or even shoots, but simply to direct buds that I will have to cut back to in future just to eliminate faults. Right now I’d gladly trade a bit of trunk size for not having jarring taper issues!
Hope you and the family are staying safe and sane!

Hi MJL , all the Atlas Cedars I have here were basically collected as seedlings with 2-4 needles and just 50mm high , that was over 20 years ago .
I still have quite a few of them doing their own thing with the occasional trim , growing old gracefully .
Cheers . Alpine
