celtis- chinese hackberry

Post by Jamie »

hey people :D

while having a look on e-bay the other week i come acros this rather nice, cheap celtis sinesis. from the pictures it looked good, once i got it in my hands it looked even better :D the root ball is full of fine feeder roots so thats a good start right there, the nebari has need of a little work, but overall alright.
these pictures are off the add, i will get some decent (well try and get some decent) pics of it as soon as possible :D

my plan is when i get the pics i will take of how it is now in leaf and then i plan on complete defoliation to show branch structure then after branch pruning and placement, the health it is in i would expect it to have new shoots all over the place within 4 weeks :D

well i know the pics as is arent great but let me know what ya all think, and any info that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Nice tree Jamie . Can't wait to see defoliated pics ,Celtis for me are a favourite as they can be collected at any time of year ,be treated harshly and will always respond with lots of growth......mmmm...I may have to go and dig some wild trees . Oh and another positive thing about Celtis is that councils will gladly give permission to collect as bonsai (always clean up afterwards) as they are considered noxious.

You should pay a trip with a shovel to Brisbane southside. They are everywhere here, normally found by roadsides. I never thought they could make good bonsai until I saw a few owsome trees from the Australian Bonsai grower nursery.

Jamie this celtis of yours looks very nice. Same here, I can't wait to see it w/o leaves.
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

yep :D and people bag it out for some reason... i know there is a lot of crap out there on it but you will find that it does ocassionally have a good find. it can be rare but if you have the patience to hunt through all the listings you can find them, this one didnt even have a picture for the ad, it just had the name, celtis chinese hackberry bonsai starter and the starting bid, which was only $4.99 but one other person out bid me a couple of times, i ended up winning with it though :D obviously :D  :D

yamadori on coast lines are the go!!! ravine's, river and creek beds. anywhere they're growing on sloping land and harsh wind. flat land is harder to find great ones unless the pruning apprentice's have been at them. :D

that sounds like the go, me and bundy might have to come down to the coast and DK and nathan might have to come up from bris and we go for a big dig :D

ok, heres the tree, i took off everything but the smallest leaves that i thought i could just leave on for now, for a stock tree with minimal refinement but shape pruning it wasnt to bad, no big crossing branches, so, once seeing the structure of the tree by itself it was like this. (pics are a bit crappy, i was getting pushed by the missus  )
celtis defoliated.jpg

after some pruning of unecessary branching, and overall thinning out, this is where it is at, i have allowed for growth of the branches and everything else so i think this one should be back to its full canopy in not much time anyway the way these things grow :D
celtis wired.jpg
im thinking i have to bring the leader across a bit more inline with the trunk with the trunk being so straight, it was just a trunk chop straight across then the leader developed from there so i will have to do something with that too.

so let me know what your thoughts are, and we are gonna have to organise this dig for sometime :D

G,day Jamie seems evil bay is sometimes worth it.

Your second picture shows some swelling at the chop where there are two branches. If this were my tree I would come down to the next branch to get rid of that swelling and have a much cleaner line.

Just my opinion for what it is worth.
Cheers ;) Pup

ok here it is as is.
celtis wired.jpg
and what i am thinking along with pup, if we are thinknig the same thing :?:
celtis wired virt.jpg
not a super virt, just simple to show thought process. cleared the apex out, and put an arrow of where the branch should go and a cut line.

that what you was thinknig too pup ???
