Airlayering a Port-wine magnolia

Hey everyone
I was wanting to airlayer a branch off one of the port-wine magnolias that we have at home but I am unsure if its a good time or not to airlayer at this time of year? And also what is the best way to airlayer? as i don't have alot of experience with Airlayering and have only done one once before which didn't grow any roots and the branch died
Any suggestions?

make sure the ring bark is completely clean of anything. no cambium no white bits nothing, and it is at least 1 and a half to 2 times the thickness of the branch to be layered, depending on your weather and climate as long as when it comes off it wont get hit by any cold snaps you should be fine. make sure the medium is moist at all time not soaking wet, having it soaking wet will cause the bark to rot and you wont get any roots and it will kill the branch, and dont be afraid of putting plenty of hormone gel/powder on, this will help with the roots being spurred on to grow

I was finally thinking of doing that air-layer some time soon. So just to clarify, would now be ok or should I wait for spring to do it.

I know, esspecially yesterday I was walking around in a shirt and shorts, it was pretty warm. So you might have a good point there about putting it on now.
